The Tie That Bonds

Chapter 25

Mia stopped at the door of the barn. The scene before her scared her as well as turned a new light on Heero. The Japanese man was sitting on the floor of the barn, back against the wall, and face buried in his hands. Though she didn't see any tears, she could feel that he was crying. Trowa was kneeled between his legs. The Latin was trying to pull the covering hands from the hidden face.

"Heero, don't do this." He whispered softly.

"This is all my fault. Because of me she's going to suffer."

"No. She won't. We won't let that happen." At this point, Trowa managed to pull the hands from the tear stained face. "Heero, look at me. . .please." The pooled colbats tilted to emerald. "I understand that you need time to fall apart, but this isn't it. You have to pull yourself together Heero." Trowa lightly placed his hands on either side of his lover's face and tenderly wiped the tears. "You know you don't want her to see you like this. She gets her strength from you. Don't break. . .not yet."

"Why won't they leave me alone? Why?" Heero's chest heaved heavily as he stared at Trowa for a answer. "I could deal with it. . .but she didn't ask for this."

"You didn't either. Now it can't be stopped. We can stop it and then we can each live the life we want. . .but, Heero, you need to stay strong. I know it hurts. . .but you have to. For her." Heero leaned back against the wall as Trowa's hands slid from his flesh. Wiping his own tears, he inhaled deeply a few times to recollect himself.

"I want you to stay out of it."

"I can't." The Japanese man looked at Trowa, the normal sternness in his colbat eyes.

"I want you to stay out of it Trowa. I mean it."

"Heero. . ."

"I need you to take care of Amelia if I don't make it."

"Don't talk like that."

"I'm not as young as I use to be Trowa. . .you can't expect me to be the way I was when even she caught me spying on her." Trowa only shook his head in disagreement. Heero pulled the taller man into a loving embrace and closed his eyes. For some reason, a sinking feeling consumed Trowa's heart, and he felt that this would be the last time he would be able to hold Heero. "I love Amelia, and I love you Trowa. If it wasn't for me, neither of you would have had to go through this bull shit. Let me protect you. . .both of you. . .I need to."

Mia couldn't take any more. Her own tears spilling, she ran into the barn. Her approach separated the two men in time for her to fling herself into Heero's arms.

Trowa lightly smoothed Mia's hair as she rested against his shoulder. It would still be at least another five hours before the shuttle would land. . .and then they would be transported to the Preventers Head Quarters. The brunette had been asleep for almost a half an hour, and in truth, Trowa's arm had lost all feeling ten minutes ago. Instead of waking her to regain circulation, he allowed her to sleep.

His attention then turned toward Heero who was sitting on the other side of him. The Japanese man was staring out into space with a distant look in his eyes. Trowa easily laid his hand over his partner's and allowed his fingers to slide between the stronger ones. The gentle touch snapped Heero from his trance as he affectionately squeezed the smaller hand.

"Are you okay?" Trowa whispered for fear of waking Mia. Heero stared into the face that he loved so much. Though they had been together for seventeen years, Heero felt that it wasn't long enough. For the first time in his life. . .he was afraid to die. He didn't want to leave Amelia or Trowa. He didn't want to leave them alone. He had been there when Amelia took her first steps. . .and the first time Trowa had told him that he loved him. He wanted to watch his daughter graduate and start a family of her own. He wanted Trowa by his side, even if they were both in a retirement home.

The mission seemed simple enough. . .but only Heero truly knew how difficult it was going to be. Not even the Preventers knew just how much of a admirable opponent that lay before them. Heero knew the organization better than they did. . .and if he was going to survive this, he was going to have to somehow out maneuver them. It was going to be tough. They made him what he was. . .so as of now, they had the advantage. They would know all of his moves before he would make them. No doubt, the president of the research center would be heavily guarded. Though Heero had kept up with his training as much as he could, he couldn't help but feel that it wasn't enough. He was no longer the Perfect Soldier. . .and for once, he wish he still was. . .at least that way he would know that everything would work out.

Thinking of this brought tears to his eyes. Though he and Trowa never married, he could still see them spending the rest of their lives together. . .at least before now. Now was unclear and anything could happen. He lifted Trowa's hand an kissed the back of it. There were so many things he wanted to say to the Latin. . .but couldn't. Despite this, he felt that Trowa knew what he wanted to say and what he was feeling right now.

Silently, he released Trowa's hand and stood up. After a couple of seconds of rummaging through the over head compartment, he pulled out his carry on bag. Trowa watched inquisitively as Heero reached into the front pocket and pulled out a small black velvet box. Leaving the bag between his feet, he turned to look into the deep green eyes.

"If something happens, I want you to remember me." He said softly and tears brimmed Trowa's eyes.

"I could never forget you Heero." Pushing back his tears, he opened the box and pulled out a small silver ring. The ring was a quarter of an inch thick, with seventeen little slashes, all around. He took the ring from the box and picked up Trowa's left hand. Fighting back his own tears, he slid the ring on Trowa's ring finger. With that, he pulled Trowa closer to him for a kiss. Duo sat back in his seat and stared at the arm of his seat. Wu Fei caught the action from the corner of his eye. He could feel the American's questions and uneasiness.

"You're unusually quite."

"I often suffer from jet lag." Duo joked, but couldn't manage to bring forth a smile.

"What's playing on your mind?"

"I just feel so bad for them. I mean, I was never much of a supporter for them. . .but now. . ." The violet eyes lifted to coal. "Isn't there something we can do for them? Some way we can fight so that Heero won't have to."

"It's not a question of what we can do. . .it's more of a question of what he will let us do. He's changed a lot since I last saw him; though he keeps some traits close. Trowa and Amelia are his family. He wouldn't trust their safety to anyone else. . .and you can't really blame him."

"Not to change the subject or anything. . .but. . .who is Sam's mother?"

"Maxwell, don't make me regret bringing you along."

Trowa gripped the bed sheet in a white knuckled grip. His body lurched with each lovingly pleasurable invasion. He couldn't hold back his moans any longer as he focused on Heero caressing him from the inside. The hardy hands roamed his naked body before finding his erection. Gripping tightly, Heero began pumping the arousal in his hand, only causing the sensations to grow.

"Oh, Heero." Trowa moaned as he started to reach his peak. Heero pulled from his lover, and Trowa turned over to lay on his back. Their eyes met in the dim light as Heero leaned forward and kissed the Latin's lips. At the same time, he guided himself back into the familiar haven. He continued with the slow affectionate thrusts as he kissed the only man he had ever loved. Trowa lightly ran his fingers through Heero's hair; all the while moaning into the depths of the Japanese man's mouth. When release finally accompanied the men, they still continued to kiss passionately. A tad tired, Heero laid against his lover and listened intently to the satisfied breathing.

"Are you okay?" Heero asked softly to cease the silence.

"Yeah." The stronger man raised to look into the green eyes. He allowed his finger tips to lightly trace the face below his as if trying to remember it for a final time. "Why are you so sure that you're going to die tomorrow?"

"Trowa, the people we're up against are the ones that made me what I was. I'm not like I was. I've felt that my body has gotten weaker over time. It's going to be that much harder to penetrate the facility."

"But Wu Fei said that they wouldn't want to kill you."

"I'll make them before they use me as the source of someone suffering the life I did."

"Let the Preventers handle it Heero. . .please."

"Trowa, you know as well as I do that they can't operate outside the law. They're going to have to wait for the right time to strike. . .that might be too late. I have to end this, now. . .before they get to Amelia." Trowa turned from the blue eyes. Heero lightly kissed along the thin cheek and jaw line. "I will do everything I can to come back to you. I will find a way to survive." He whispered softly and kissed his lover again. He stared at the profile a moment before pulling away. Trowa watched as he dressed and headed for the door. He didn't need to ask to know that Heero was going to see Mia before she would fall asleep. Turning his back to the door, he allowed his tears to spill onto his pillow.

He tried to think of a way to avoid Heero from going after the president and vice president of the company. There had to be a way to prevent Heero from going through with this. His thoughts were interrupted as the door to the room opened, and light flooded from the hall for a split second. Just as he turned to face the person that stepped in, a stun gun was placed against his neck. He felt a jolt surge through his body before everything turned black.
